Force tensiometers that are a powerful and accurate technique to measure static surface and interfacial tension of liquids.

These direct measurements allow determination of a number of material and surface properties, such as dynamic contact angle, surface free energy, critical micelle concentration (CMC) and wettability.

This information can be used to determine adhesion, absorption, adsorption, cleanliness, surface heterogeneity, density, spreading, porosity, powder or sedimentation wettability, material solubility, biocompatibility and lubricity of solid surfaces, to name but a few.

Density force tensiometry has become the method of choice for many industrial standards related to characterization of liquids.  It is also the most widely used technique for measuring critical micelle concentration (CMC) of surfactants. In addition, it is the only method to determine the absorption and contact angle of a packed powder or of fibre beds using the Washburn method. The wetting of textiles and individual fibres can also be studied with Sigma force tensiometers.

Measurement principle
When a liquid touches the surface of a solid, the liquid tends to be drawn up in a meniscus. The force exerted by the meniscus is measured and analyzed to determine surface tension. Using high surface free energy probes such as a platinum Du Noüy ring or Wilhelmy plate allow precise measurement of these forces. All Sigma force tensiometers measure surface and interfacial tension using plates or push and pull modes by ring. Correction calculations for rings are made using models from Huh and Mason (Harkins and Jordan, Zuidema & Waters and others also available).

Sigma 702ET

The open design and convenient control keyboard operations makes the Sigma 702ET extremely easy to use. Results are displayed on a large integrated digital screen. Sigma 702ET is specifically designed for oil-water interfacial tension (IFT) measurements. The instrument is particularly suitable for IFT determinations of transformer oils and hydrocarbon fuels in accordance with IEC 62961, ASTM D971 and IEC 60422 standards and comes with software designed for oil-water measurements.

Sigma 702ET is typically used in the energy industry to check the interfacial tension between transformer oils and water.

The Sigma 703D is extremely easy to use.  With convenient control keyboard operations and open design there is no need for an external computer.  Measurements are displayed in real-time on the large digital screen integrated into the instrument and can be transferred to a computer using the Data receiver software.

For quick and reliable stand-alone operation and manual control, Sigma 703D is the best solution. The major difference between the Sigma 703D and Sigma 702 models is the manual sample stage of Sigma 703D.

Surface Potential Sensor:Get an in-depth view of the Langmuir monolayer interactions with our KSV NIMA Surface Potential Sensor (SPOT). 

 What you can do:

• Determine molecular orientation. The SPOT provides information about molecular orientation by observing changes in surface potential and combining the data with surface pressure information.
• In-depth view of Langmuir layer interactions. Surface pressure isotherm alone is unable to separate the reasons for surface pressure changes. Combined with the SPOT, the data gathered from the layer is doubled, giving an in-depth understanding of the layer.
• Determine effective dipole moments. The sensor can be used to determine effective dipole moments through simple surface potential measurements of a compressed film.
• Characterize film electronic structure. Small changes in the electronic structure of molecules can be detected by measuring the change in surface potential.
• Characterize molecular structure. Quantify the effects of changes to molecular structure through positional offsets and peak values of the surface potential plots.
• Monitor complex formation. Observe and follow complex formations between monolayers, sub-phase species or adsorbates.
